Reading and Phonics
At Blisworth School, we aim to have children reading as quickly as possible. This means we work hard with children to develop their decoding skills and then their inference and deduction skills. With these skills, children are able to flourish in the rest of the curriculum ensuring the make the most progress possible and ensuring they are ready for the next stage in their education.
In the Early Years and Key Stage 1 we use 'Read, Write, Inc Phonics' to teach children's early reading and writing skills. In Classes reception and year 1, children are taught a Phonics daily and throughout the day will have a range of opportunities to rehearse and refine their skills. Beyond this, we use Read, Write, Inc Phonics as needed.
We use Accellerated Reader once children have become 'readers'. This us usually from year 2 upwards and we use the system to ensure that children read broadly and regularly. Our library is full of wonderful reading material and is a place that children choose to be.
